Featuring Ayden & Shilo
Winter, Year 758 of the New Age
Silverthorne, Silverwood along the Iron Hills border

Shilo

The snow seemed to stretch on, creating dips and hills beneath what little cover the barren trees could provide. It was a cold day, her thicker coat darker with all the extra fur for these moments. Shilo’s dark eyes were half lidded from the glaring sun overhead that bounced off the snow like Glenmore magic - if one believed it. She’d never seen the light magic in use, but rumors went around…

Besides, she’d taken refuge between rocks to get out of the sun and wind, among other things. The main herd was off in the distance, bashing their heads together in an interesting manner. She’d always admired the various style of racks that adorned the bucks and even some does, but how they fought with such different styles left her baffled.

So, here she was. In a small nest of snow and rocks to escape the loud noises and the huge gathering of fawnlings that had turned violent and rambunctious. All for each other attentions; a fact she’d be more than happy to ignore. Unless it was a passerby, for no matter how hard she wanted to keep to herself, a friendly face that smiled and nodded sent the young doe into a run of embarrassment that she didn’t want to have explained.

Ayden

The buck had been off patrolling the edges of the herd, moving gradually further and further away to make sure that no predators were creeping closer while most of the herd was distracted with the season. Not that he wasn’t one of those...but it was easier to keep a clearer head away from does and stags alike, who he would rather like to butt heads with. Yet...he never seemed to win. No does ever seemed to desire him, though he’d actually had some close interactions with a golden doe named Laika recently...close enough to make her run off crying.

The thought soured the buck’s mood, head hanging a little lower before he took a bracing breath of cold air, and resumed his patrol. He had to be alert, make sure he caught any tracks there might be, and lingering scents of predators or…doe?

Ayden stopped in his tracks, taking another deep breath. Yes, that was unmistakably the scent of a doe, a mature one. And, one he even knew, though the scent didn’t bring a name to mind. It had been a while since he’d been around this doe. Brown eyes shifted about the landscape as he headed toward the source, before eventually picking out a golden hide amongst the rocks. The buckskin markings brought a name to mind, as well as a smile to muzzle that turned into a grin as he pranced forward. It was something he couldn’t help.

“Shilo! I see you hiding there! What are you doing so far away from the herd? Don’t you know it could be dangerous?” Ayden called, halting as he drew within a few feet, head high and tail flicking behind him. He was posing as ever, confident, arrogant, cheerful.

Shilo

The doe was lost in thought, not hearing the approaching crunch of hooves in the snow. It wasn’t until she heard her name, that she jumped up from between the rocks to twist around suddenly. Her dark eyes were wide, spotting a stag that continued to address her.

Her ears did a three sixty, running through the basic emotions before settling on curiosity. Her large ears pricked forward, dark eyes becoming less wide; she smiled softly as he pranced forward. Oh she remembered the stag perfectly well with all the preening of a rooster he put on. Shilo couldn’t remember anyone who could strut like that year round.

She swished the dark hairs on the end of her tail against the dent she’d once laid within, “I’m well aware of what lurks this far, but then I’ve got you to always pull me out of it. What brings you this far, pray tell?”

Her personality felt like it’d taken a turn for the worse, because it was taking an effort not to mess up her words. The strutting Ayden was far too appealing right now, which worried her flirtatious mind. The last thing on her mind was a fawn, not after the incident nearly a year prior. Still, he wasn’t that clumsy buck that had gotten her out of lessons… or was it the other way around? She couldn’t quite recall the small details, but the big picture overall left her with a good impression. One she could enjoy, as though she was quiet Ayden was loud and proud, which kept her on her toes and amused since he took the lead.

Ayden

The soldier couldn’t help but laugh as the doe jumped, he must have surprised her. He wasn’t sneaky in the least, or stealthy, so she must have been pretty preoccupied with something. Or at least he assumed she was.

“Well, that’s true. I definitely won’t let any harm come to you!” Ayden replied with a smirk, before tossing his head. “I’m on patrol, like usual. Making sure any cave lions don’t sneak close to pretty does such as yourself,” tone was obviously flirtatious, there was no subtlety with this dun. “So what are you doing? Not skipping classes, I bet. You must be done with them by now, right?” he inquired, curious and nosy, really just saying what was popping into his mind in true Ayden fashion.

The doe had grown up nicely, and he assumed she had a decent grasp of fire magic, but she was out in a dangerous part of the kingdom.

Shilo

The doe laughed quietly upon his first remark then grinned when the second had come. Looks like skipping that class had put him off from being a soldier, not that she doubted it would. Her ears perked forward, shifting her front legs to find a solid purchase in the snow before taking a few steps closer to close the distance.

“Well, Mister Soldier, the herd and myself thank you for the protection,” she chuckled, dipping her chin towards the white mark on her chest in a show of respect. Once she lifted her face she puffed out a cheek in thought; was she ever really done with things?

“Done with herb lore, that’s for certain,” she agreed calmly. Under pressure she hadn’t done well, so for the sake and health of those she’d never treat, she hadn’t finished it. Something she could regret later, or she could try again.

Shaking her gold and white spotted pelt to rid herself of the cold snow before it could melt to her skin, Shilo eyed him curiously. “I see you’ve gotten your soldier status,” she stood still after a few moments, “and a pair of antlers to boot.”

Ayden

“And that’s what makes this job so worthwhile,” the soldier replied with a wide grin, bobbing his head in return to her gesture of respect. He had to admit, it felt really nice to actually be thanked. It didn’t happen that often, since it was simply assumed of a soldier. Ayden liked doing it of course, and would never have thought twice about a second line of duty, but it was good to be openly appreciated. Very flattering to his ego.

“Ew, herbs. Who needs those?” Ayden replied, making a funny face, as if he’d tasted something sour. It was definitely not something he’d ever excelled at, or even been slightly decent, quite frankly. He didn’t want to memorize long lists, and often didn’t have the memory capacity to do so. He was much more based in the realm of instinct than that of smarts. “Well, I suppose healers do, and they’re good to have around. You aren’t gonna be a healer then?” he added, though almost in a rhetorical way. Of course she wasn’t, if she didn’t want to do anything with herbs. Even he could figure that out.

“Of course I did! Did you ever doubt me?” tone was mocking pitiful notes, a pout creeping upon face before disappearing behind a smirk. “Chased off a couple of Blackwood demons, proved my worth to the them, finally. As if I wasn’t good enough before! Oh well, I made it. And my antlers are going to keep growing, getting bigger and bigger,” the red dun added, unable to resist winking at the buckskin before him.

Shilo

The doe was ever so patient, listening to Ayden talk. It was amusing, thinking of how much this stag had to say. “Nope, I’m not going to be a healer anytime soon,” she agreed, even though it was more of a statement than a question.

Upon hearing of his not so little run in of the Blackwood raiders, she pulled her head back in shock. Like most rumors, she’d heard of the large Blackwoods being aggressive and overly dangerous. From the Silverthrone’s she’d met in her lifetime though, she never doubted their prowess.

“I’d never doubted you,” she smiled, dark eyes narrowing softly. “Plus, it just shows you’re above the average stock. And if those are just going to be getting bigger, you’d best look out for all the ladies.” She chuckled, unable to hold back her comment with Ayden winking.

When she was little she’d fled those who partook in rut openly and often. Now, even though she wasn’t interested in having a fawn, it seemed to be getting better. Having the few stags she knew flaunt and tease was fun, in a way.

Ayden

“You didn’t?” Words were faintly surprised, when she said she’d never doubted him, though the buck tried to quickly hide it. Of course she hadn’t! He chuckled as she commented about his rack, grin growing even wider. “I’ll have a hard time choosing which ladies to be in my harem, won’t I? They’ll allll be hoping to be part of this soldier’s protection.” One couldn’t be sure his smirk could even get wider, with the way he was grinning like a fool just then.

“I really am hoping to be one of the best soldiers though. I don’t skip as many drills now, as I did back then. Gotta get strong and fit, to be elite,” Ayden continued, tone only slightly more serious as he chuckled and lifted a foreleg to flex the muscles within his muscled shoulder and thick neck. “Who knows, maybe in a couple of years I’ll entrance you with my strength,” the red dun couldn’t help but add, tossing another exaggerated wink the doe’s way. He couldn’t help it, he was simply having fun. She was young, rather too young to be desirable just yet, and quite frankly it was nice to simply be allowed to be himself and not be pushed away.

Shilo

The buckskin doe found Ayden amusing. Enough personality for the both of them, or would it be enough words? Either way, since she was quiet, he could talk for the both of them and she could do what she did best. Listen. The spark in her eye was in place of a laugh - if he smiled any wider his face might just break in half.

“Just keep an eye open for those lions and Blackwoods, and you’ll get there,” Shilo said, a light bounce to her words as she chuckled effortlessly. And that’s when the flirting picked back up, making her dark eyes grow wide in a moment of surprise. She quickly subdued it though, shaking her black mane in a bubbly laugh.

“Maybe, you never know,” she spoke in a sing song voice, batting her long eyelashes. She wouldn’t partake in rut anytime soon, but it felt nice to be able to talk to someone without them blatantly trying to get at her. It was like a weight lifted off her shoulders, since rut had always been a stressful time even when she was younger.

Ayden

“Oh, I keep them open! And my ears open, rack up, and magic at the ready,” he agreed, grin remaining firmly in place, and snorted out flickers of fire, just to show off. They petered out before they even hit the snow covered grass, but it was decent level fire magic, perfect for showing off. He was surprised though, when she laughed and say maybe, batting her lashes. “Wait, really?” Ayden almost stammered, surprised. Even that was more than he usually received from does, and it made him stand up straight again, grinning like a fool.

“By the way, how long ya planning on staying out here by yourself?” he inquired, flicking his tail at the surrounding cold terrain. Maybe she’d let him stay and keep guard for her...there wasn’t anything pressing he needed to do back with the herd, anyway, and from these rocks he could see for a ways. He could keep watch on his sector from here, and enjoy the presence of a pretty doe who wasn’t chasing him away or making rude comments.

Shilo

Rolling her shoulders in a mild shrug, Shilo lifted a leg from the cold snow. The little display of magic drew her dark eyes, ears pressing forward as they flickered out before the snow. That’s why she liked Silverthorne, rather than wander into some new land. The fire magic kept her warm and the stags fiery. “Haha, just keep your eyes peeled,” she pressed her hoof back into the premade print it had once been in, “you never know when I’ll wander around.” The chance of her actually staying around in rut were always slim, but she was comfortable around very few stags. In the long run, even at her current age, she’d keep them in mind when the call for a fawn arrives.

She puffed a cheek out at his question, not certain herself. Normally she stayed way out here, but that answer might bring more questions. “I don’t know,” she admitted. Frowning for a split second, she brushed it off and grinned. “Maybe a while longer, you’re welcome to stay if your soilderly duties aren’t going to call you away,” spoke with good humor, the doe continued to smile.

Ayden

“My soldierly duties include protecting pretty young does, so I’d say this counts,” the dun replied with a smirk, gaze shifting from the fawnling before him to peer around. “Besides, I’m only on patrol duty for this area, and I can see a decent ways from here. So I’d be fine,” Ayden added, nodding his head. Tone had actually adopted a serious note for a minute, smirk fading, before glancing back to his companion brought it right back to his features.

“I can’t have any sneaky predators coming up behind you, now can I?”

Shilo

The doe spoke in good humor, “Stay as long as you’d like then.”

Shilo was better for his company, didn’t feel as cold with her mind off it. Glancing around the area, she nodded. Her dark eyes took in the white - so much white and black from the birch, then muted colors of the bare underbrush that peeked through the snow. Her eyes rested on Ayden and gave a small laugh. The only things colorful in a time like this were those around the herd. Personalities and all.

“I doubt any predators would get the jump on you,” she smirked, quirking one ear forward and the second one to the side.

Ayden

“That might be longer than you’re comfortable with,” the red dun warned, a large, goofy grin upon his muzzle that slowly morphed into a smirk. She might have to chase him away with a branch, he decided with a chuckle. At her laugh, ears swiveled, and he turned curious eyes on the doe. What was she laughing at? Him?

Ah, no, not him then! That was good. “No, they wouldn’t. I’m much too alert and good a soldier for that to happen. I can see ‘em from a day away!” Ayden bragged, tone quite cocky. He lowered his head and breathed out sparks again, catching them on a bit of grass to build a small fire. Something to keep them both warm, depending on how long Shilo wanted to be out here. For himself, he took an easy stance, one where he could keep an eye on the situation, and easily keep chatting up the golden beauty beside him.

After a while, they fell into a companionable silence, a relaxed oasis in a usually tension filled season.
